The importance of water for human existence can be estimated from the fact that a major portion of a human body is constituted of water. But have you ever thought about what may be lurking in the water that you and your family members drink every day? Well, it may be bacteria, fungi and other toxic metals that may prove to be extremely harmful for humans in the long run. If you are considerate about the safety and health of your family, then it is the wisest thing to invest in a reliable and effective water filters purifier. It is significant to provide safety to your family and this can be adequately done by giving them safe water to drink.

While searching for a water purifier for your home, it is wise to carry out a thorough research of all the models available in the market and make a list of ones that you would like to buy. It is a fact that all drinking water purifier systems are not that successful in removing the unsafe chemicals and if you invest in a wrong model of water purifier, then you will just end up wasting your money in a useless piece of equipment. These reviews can be found in different places including newspapers, magazines and classifieds, but the fastest way to find the one is over the Internet. There are literally thousands of sites over the net that offer reviews of models manufactured by different companies. If you are interested to buy a purifier of a particular brand, then you can visit the company’s site and find the one that best suits your requirements, preferences and budget. Comments left by people on such sites may prove to be extremely helpful in choosing the best water purifier system for your household. If you can’t completely rely upon these sources of information, you can ask for referrals from your relatives and friends. These people may suggest you which one to buy and which one not to buy depending upon their experience. If you find that one of your friends is satisfied with a particular model of water purifier, then buying that same model will be wise for you.
Types of drinking water purification systems: While purchasing a water purifier system, you need to give attention to the amount of water you need to purify everyday. The more water you purify, the faster the machine will wear out. There are several companies in Honululu, Hawaii and Oahu that are manufacturing purifiers for different quantities of usage. You can purchase a water purifier not only for your household but also for the time when you are traveling or on a camping trip. Bottle purifiers are portable and can be carried anywhere you go. Other purification systems may include electric water purifiers, water filters, water filter pitchers, water dispensers, single clear purifiers, pure bottle-less water coolers, UV water purification model and reverse osmosis purification models.
Before purchasing a water purifier, make sure to taste the water it produces. This is important because taste of water changes after purifying and you should check whether you are comfortable with that taste or not.

Around Christmas I bought a Sport Berkey portable water purifier on eBay for about . I had planned to use it this summer and do a revue on it. From what I have read about the Sport Berkey I really thought it would make a very nice, light-weight, inexpensive (in other words, cheap) water filter that would be relatively safe. According to the Sport Berkey people their filter will remove up to 99.9% of many health-threatening contaminants, including harmful pathogens, pesticides, detergents, Aluminum, Mercury, Radon 222, and such using something called the Ionic Adsorption Micro Filtration System. It has a shelf life of 50 years. Then we had a situation here where the Township informed us that the water supply is contaminated with Ecoli bacteria and that we should boil any water that we wanted to drink. With that I figured now would be a good time to put the Sport Berkey to test. In this video I am trying a test that I’ve seen where blue food dye is filtered through the Sport Berkey. It indeed does filter out the blue food dye completely. In the video I mentioned that the bottle could be refilled 160 times from sources like streams and 640 times from Municipal water supplies. What I failed to mention is the capacity of the bottle. With the filter in place the bottle holds 22 fl oz, but I doubt that more than 16 fl oz could be gotten out of the bottle at one time. Thanks Hiram, have you ever experimented with the bota bottle? I also have the msr miniworks I intend to do this test with bothof them.

@hiramcook No e-coli side effects Hiram? I am thinking about buying one of these, compared to other handpump type filter, seems selfcontained here- the berkey type. in a pinch, im thinking maybe one could cut (or install) a smaller tubing and use this water filter upside down and gravity feed to another container for boiling. good video testing.

They don’t actually mention that on their website, but one Berkey retailer’s website say “the Berkey filtration elements are not meant to treat salt water and may damage your filter elements.” Another says “NOTE: it is not a desalinator, and does not work with salt water.”

  • snede2112 says:

It shows up on their web site in the camping section. It’s called a Sawyer inline water filter.

  • UberCon says:

I used food dye not ink ;)

  • UberCon says:

I just did this test with my seychelle filtering straw. It did not filter the ink. :( The seychelle filter is 99.9999%. I was going to buy the seychelle bottle, but now I might have to try this bottle.

  • JimboJitsu says:

interesting, am wondering how thorough test it though? Parts Per million filtering… that wasn’t may parts is all. a ratio of 50% dye 50% water might be a more accurate “survival” test?

My math is very bad… but 99.999999% filter capability. 1 drop of dye in how man cups of water is at which %? 0.9999%

So maybe the filter wasn’t really tested towards maximum capacity is all…

Love the video, I am going to have to dig mine out one day and run the tests too…
    Thanks for sharing!

Hiram I just followed your links and they have several videos of their products. I clicked on the sports bottle which was the third one down. I played it a few times and the actor says: “You can’t tell the difference from fresh water and sea water.” But check it out I may have misunderstood. All the sea water purifiers I’ve seen are like close to 1000.00 let me know. thanks

  • hiramcook says:

Which ad is that? I don’t remember them ever saying it would remove salt. Would be an interesting test, easy to do if they said that. Please let me know where that ad is.

  • pappyhighlife says:

I may be wrong Hiram but their add says “You can’t tell the difference from fresh water and sea water.” Are they saying it filters sea water as well?
    Or did I miss something?

I have the burkey 2 1/2 gallon tank, Love it. I don’t like squeezing the bottle I had one of them. I just fill mine up and use it. Missonaries out on the field live with theses with poor water conditions, and indeed they work. Best to get rain water and use it with this even better than out of the tap.

  • hiramcook says:

Not yet, but then that’s like the guy who jumps off of a 30-story building
and every floor says, “So far, so good!”
    LOL

  • hiramcook says:

If you find it please let me know what they call it. I’ld be interested in checking it out too. Thanks.

  • snede2112 says:

Cool, thanks for sharing. I saw something like this at Walmart. I’ll have to check it out.

  • BrokenAeroVT says:

Nice test. Any cramps yet? haha

  • hiramcook says:

One way might be to put a pebble in your pocket everytime you fill the bottle. Then when you fall in the stream and can’t swim, you know it’s time to change the filter. Please remember, don’t try anything you’ve seen in my videos or that I’ve told you. I am a trained idiot. LOL

  • hiramcook says:

I’m still waiting to see if there is a bill for removing the Ecoli from our water supply. LOL

  • faranglaw says:

handy to have around..especially if the government water supply comes with FREE e-coli !!!

  • hiramcook says:

The bottle with the filter in place, holds about 22 fl oz. I think though the most you could get out at a time would be about 16 fl oz.

  • hiramcook says:

Yea, I thought of getting one of the filters to that to play with. Bet you could make a great little filter with that for a hiking group.

  • hiramcook says:

If you mean what I think you mean, yea drinking the water made my teeth a little blue. I knew it was a mistake as soon as I drank the blue water. My wife gave me a little hell for that. LOL

  • IVOIPSG says:

Great Video Hiram, I won one of those two months ago and have always wondered how does one keep up with the number of times they used it…Hummmm? Anyone?

  • d3wdman says:

Hiram smurfed the water, and smurfed it after drinking it!!

  • d3wdman says:

I’ve wondered about this product. Thank you Hiram.

  • Mahalalel3 says:

Hiram, The big Berkey is really the best for home. You will be able to put 1000′s of gallon through it. A very not good but great investment. It’s all done by gravity so power outages will not effect it.
